Curriculum Overview: GCSE-Statistics-Curriculum-Plan-2026-2028.pdf
At Lytchett Minster School, GCSE Statistics gives students the opportunity to develop their understanding of how data is collected, analysed and used to make decisions in the real world. Statistics plays an important role in everyday life, from understanding health information and opinion polls to interpreting sporting performance and economic trends.
Students follow the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Statistics course over two years, studying for five hours per fortnight. We teach Foundation and Higher students together, providing appropriate support and challenge to ensure that all students can make progress and achieve their potential.
Throughout the course, students learn how to plan statistical investigations, collect and present data, calculate and interpret statistical measures, explore probability and draw conclusions from their findings. A key focus is developing students' ability to question information, recognise misleading statistics and communicate their reasoning clearly.
The course builds on the mathematical knowledge developed at KS3 and complements GCSE Mathematics. It also provides valuable skills for further study in subjects such as Mathematics, Psychology, Biology, Geography, Business and Economics.
Assessment
Students are assessed through two written examinations, each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 50% of the final grade. Calculators are permitted in both examinations. Students are entered for either Foundation or Higher tier.
Throughout Years 10 and 11, regular assessments, retrieval activities and feedback help students identify their strengths and areas for improvement.
