What are the aims of the course?

This course equips students with the knowledge of how to run their own business and/or work in one. It provides students with an exciting opportunity to understand the commercial world including how finance is raised and used by various stakeholders and the conflicts that can arise because of this.

The course enables students to apply business theory to various situations taken from the ‘real world’. There are various Business Studies trips that take place so students can investigate businesses and see theory in practice.  Trips include Purbeck ice-cream and Farmer Palmers.

How will the course be assessed?

2 Exams externally assessed.

Theme 1: 1 hour 30 mins.  50% of qualification

Theme 2: 1 hour 30 mins.  50 % of qualification.

The exams will consist of 3 sections of calculations, multiple choice, short answer and extended writing questions.

Two sections will be based on business contexts given in the paper.

What is the content of the course?

 Year 1 Investigating small businesses

  • Enterprise and Entrepreneurship
  • Spotting a business opportunity
  • Putting an idea into practise
  • Making the business effective
  • External influences of a business.

Year 2 Building a business

Making marketing, operational, financial and human resource decisions, to build a successful business.

What will I be able to do by the end of the course?

You will leave the course with an understanding of what businesses are all about, how to set one up and what makes a successful one.  You will also develop a wide range of skills that can be applied to a wide range of A Level subjects as well as to the world of work, such as: group work, group presentations, project writing, role play, internet research and independent study.  In particular you will be well prepared for both the A Level in Business and the widening world of working in Business.
