What are the aims of the course?
BTECs are vocationally related qualifications, where learners develop knowledge and understanding by applying their learning and skills in a work-related context. Students will look at how athletes can reach optimal levels through training principles, Fitness Tests, how the body reacts adapts to training and the practical demands of sport on the body systems.

What is the content of the course?
To achieve the BTEC Level 1 / Level 1/2 First Award in Sport, learners must complete 3 core Units and 1 optional Unit. A total of 4 Units all together.

Mandatory Units:
Unit 1. Fitness  for Sport and Exercise (External)

Unit 2. Practical Performance in Sports (Internal)

Unit 3. Applying the principles of Personal Training (Internal Synoptic)

Optional Specialist units:
Unit 4. The Mind and Sports Performance

Unit 5. The Sports Performer in Action

Unit 6. Leading Sports Activities

How will the course be assessed? 

  • 25% - Online 1 hr Exam in Unit 1: Fitness For Sports and Exercise
  • 75% - Coursework marked and delivered in School through 3 Units.

What will the course be like?
The course will involve offsite visits and Sports professionals coming in to school to work with you.  It is vital that you are prepared to work effectively in such adult and work-related contexts in a way that projects an excellent image of the school and yourself.

Are there any special requirements?
A keen interest in sport and a willingness to commit you to the range of activities offered by the course are essential.   The course will encourage personal development through practical participation and performance in a range of sports and exercise activities. It will also give learners the wider understanding and appreciation of health related fitness, sports and exercise and focus on leadership skills.

What will I be able to do by the end of the course?
Success on the course can lead to higher qualifications being taken either at school or at college.  In our Sixth Form, we offer the progression route onto the Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport.
